Hadestown, a modern retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, is a fairly new musical on the Broadway stage, premiering in 2019. The high school adaptation, including some new language and voice parts adapted to suit younger and less experienced voices, was released very recently in March 2025. As such, it is a very new musical, and has not seen many performances yet in the region. Many had not even heard of the show before it was announced as Coopersville Theatre Company's 2025 fall musical.
Coopersville is a somewhat religious town, however, whose residents often stick very close to their traditional mindsets and morals. Being based on a Greek myth and also quite literally taking place in Hell, Hadestown has been a controversial show for many of the more religious crowd. Some students were even forbidden by their parents from participating in the show altogether.
Despite the aversion from some, many were still able to audition. Hadestown's cast hopes to encourage Coopersville residents to view the show objectively, appreciating its positive themes of love, loyalty, and connection. Orpheus' actor felt especially passionate about his role, commenting:
It is such a genuine honor to get to play this role for this company. I am beyond excited to show everyone all the hard work we have put into this show, and to get the opportunity to tell this story - which, in the end, is really all about love. What is more beautiful than that?
And, truly, what is more beautiful than that?
